Have you ever watched an underdog story in sports and just wished you had taken the risk at putting some money on the winner? Well, there are some fairy-tale stories where longshot bets have resulted in massive winnings for some brave gamblers.
It might not always end the way you want it but betting on an underdog is a high-risk way to earn more money than might even be possible by placing the safe bets.
Here are some of the most unexpected winners in sports betting!
Gerry Mcllroy – the Dad Who Believed
Back in the early 2000s, no one was as famous as Tiger Woods in the golfing world. If anyone wanted a safe bet with meagre winnings Tiger was the man to bet on.
But not for Gerry Mcllroy, the dad of now world-famous golfer Rory Mcllroy. Gerry took a chance on his son at the 2004 open championship. Rory was still an unknown in the golfing world and Gerry took home $342 000 from a measly $500 stake.
Leicester City Win the Premier League
The English Premier League has its traditional big hitters – the “Big Six” as fans of the tournament like to call them. Historically these clubs are Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
If it’s not one of these six who lift the title at the end of the season, it’d be a small miracle, and a miracle is the best way to describe Leicester City’s’ title triumph back in 2016.
The club was battling relegation the season before and looked a shoe in to end the season somewhere near the bottom of the 20-team table. But that was not what the football gods had in store for fans of the game that year.
Sports experts still have no explanation as to how Leicester won the title but one lucky better took the chance and placed a 5000-1 bet on the English club and took home a whopping £20 000 winning.
Tyson The Unstoppable – Stopped
The 1990s were Mike Tyson’s decade in terms of heavyweight boxing. He was an unstoppable force – something experts hadn’t ever seen before in the post. Tyson, by this point, had earned the nickname, Mike “Iron” Tyson.
And then came along inconsistent and unknown Buster Douglas, a boxer who had a less than clean record, with just as many losses as he wins to his name at this point. Douglas had been doing well for himself; well enough to earn a championship fight against Tyson.
The odds were 42-1 in favour of Tyson retaining his heavyweight title and sending Douglas to the canvass, yet that is not at all what happened. Douglas won the fight, earned his championship, and won a few lucky gamblers $37 000 from a $1000 stake.
The bottom line is that in sports and at playlive casino, anything can happen. Unpredictability is what makes these games beautiful. Sometimes you just need to take a calculated risk and stand a chance to take home the winnings of a lifetime.
