What is JPEG?

The full form of this term JPEG is Joint Photographic Experts Group. This is a kind of formatting of the image. JPEG is a certain method to compress the digital images for those images particularly those that have been produced with digital photography.

How much compression is needed is adjustable, hence the photographer can select a suitable storage size and also image quality. Typically, JPEG can achieve 10:1 compression without compromising the image quality.

Generally, people like to take images in JPEG format so that they can store more images in their camera since JPEG image consumes a comparatively much lesser amount of memory space in digital storage.

You will realize that raw files are your actual photos where every detail has been captured vividly. While processing your picture, you can decide which one to eliminate and which to remain in your actual photography.

In case you are not interested in processing your photo then there is no sense in taking a picture in JPEG format. Some people may be interested in the photographs that have been actually taken from the camera.

So, there can be another idea – why not take photographs in both raw as well as JPEG? As such, memory space is no longer an issue these days and hence you can store images in both formats.

In case ever you need to refer to the raw image then you can always do that. Also, if you like to share your photos, then use the JPEG which consumes lesser space in memory and is hence easier to share.
